Post driconf on debian Etch fails...env variable problem

On my Etch driconf when invoked from terminal errored out as below:
prakash@etch:~$ driconf

(driconf:10478): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
        Using the fallback 'C' locale.
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/driconf", line 26, in ?
    import driconf
  File "/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/", line 33, in ?
    import driconf_commonui
  File "/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/", line 45, in ?
    locale.setlocale(locale.LC_ALL, '')
  File "/usr/lib/python2.3/", line 381, in setlocale
    return _setlocale(category, locale)
locale.Error: unsupported locale setting

I solved it by selecting 'C' as default language.(POSIX)
now driconf works...
