Disable touch pad

I am running Sid on a Compaq laptop and I would like to disable the Synaptics touch pad. I have tried editing the xorg.conf file but then I get errors and X will not start. I do not need to disable the entire touch pad only the mouse buttons (thanks to kids and sodas the buttons are sticky ).

did u check the BIOS if there is method to disable the touchpad ?

I did check the bios and found nothing, but I will look again. I used Ubuntu for a short time on this laptop and there was an option in the mouse configuration that disables the touchpad, the problem was that Ubuntu loads compiz and messes up any DVD viewing even with compiz disabled. Then again I perfer pure Debian.
