difference in .config options

i am puzzled by the following....:

what is the difference between custom compiling a kernel with the
processor option set for Pentium 4 (p4) and opposed to 686?

I don't know anything about compiling kernels.

I did an 'apt-cache search kernel-image 2.4'

kernel-image-2.4.27-1-686 - Linux kernel image for version 2.4.27 on PPro/Celero
n/PII/PIII/PIV

So, PIV = 686

P4 most likely has extra optimization flags (i.e. SSE3 and Hyperthreading). i686 probably doesn't have it since it has to run on a broader range of architectures (P2/3/4, Athlon, C3 Nehemiah).
