Diff btn --append-to-version & --revision.

I have been compiling Debain Kernel(Sarge, 2.6.8-2-386) many times using the Debian way i.e. using make-kpkg.

In the process there is one step which says to do:
fakeroot make-kpkg --revision=custom.1.0 kernel_image

Recently I found that there is another option called --append-to-version also.

Does any one knows the difference between the two?

I tried reading this article

but it was not clear.

All in the howto you're reading
For example I have this kernel installed:
ii kernel-image- 10.00.Custom Linux kernel binary image for version 2.6.12
The version is 2.6.12 and I have appended the compile date to it to distinguish the kernel if I want to compile another one. The revision is 10.00.Custom but that doesn't show in /lib/modules/$(uname -r) so I see no point in changing the revision for a kernel you just use yourself. If you upload the kernel package somewhere to others you could change the revision but even then you could just append your name to the version.
