query: on net-install

Debian is my 2nd (non-live) distro I have installed. First being Red Hat series (inc. Fedora).

I downloaded and burnt the Debian 'net' install version. Hmm not bad. Debian installation reminds me of good ol' Red Hat 5.2. Text-mode installation rules.

Anyways, I got to the add/remove application stage. What? It's text mode... and it's really cramped. Damn. I'll skip this stage. Cool. Now I don't have any window managers installed. Hmm... luckily I remember my apt-get skills. apt-get install kde. Yay! But how do I start kde? startkde gives me cannot start xserver or something. And x is installed coz I typed x <tab> and see lots of x11 stuff.

Plus what are these (during partitioning disk stage):

Configure software RAID
Configure the Logical Volume Manager
Guided partitioning

?

So...the question is...? I'm asking this since this site is called LinuxQuestions, not www.blogger.com where a diary can be kept.

You have to do:

Code:

apt-get install x-window-system kdm kde

If you want to repair a posting mistake, better post a new reply instead of editing the original. Or maybe you wanted to make me look like a fool?
Anyone can see that your original message was modifed 38 minutes after I posted my reply. And for the others to know, the original thread did not contain this part:

Instead it said "Coffee break..." and there was no question regarding Linux or something else at all. Let's respect each other and not give anyone the impression that LQ is an ordinary forum, but one whose members have a bit of decency.

Sorry harken. From what I known in the past... when people read posts they just read the top post and then post a reply irrespective of any other replies. Making you look like a fool was not my intention. However am sure they know that it has been edited and that your reply was referring to something else... instead of the current top post.

You were right that my original post was a bit silly and didn't get to the point... so I had to edit it. otherwise I would get all these people saying exactly what you just said.

"startx /usr/bin/startkde" should start kde.
