Deskjet 712c not working

Linux 2.6.8-2-386 #1 i686 GNU/Linux (Bone stock 3.1 kernel)
Debian 3.1
KDE 3.4

I'm not able to print anything to the HP Deskjet 712c that is attached to my parallel port, A visit to localhost:631 shows that my printer is online and accepting jobs. Submitting a test page from there shows a status of "aborted" in the job history, and the only other clue is "Error: client-error-not-possible". This seems to be the case whether using CUPS or LPD/LPR. It doesn't seem to matter what configuration I try, the result is always the same.

$ sudo cat textfile > /dev/lp0
doesn't get me anywhere either.

I've googled and read for a couple of hours now and am at a loss. Every other distribution I have installed has allowed me to totally disregard printer configuration; it has always worked by default.

I had the same problem with an HP 932C. I went to http://localhost:631, deleted the printer and did the following:

#apt-get install cupsys-client hplip hplip-base hplip-data hpijs hp-ppd

After they all installed, I went back to http://localhost:631 and added the printer. I tried to print a test page and this time it worked.

Good luck!

Update: That was not all I needed to do. While I was able to print a test page, It still wound'nt print from Firefox. I went back and installed the following:

#apt-get install cupsys-bsd

When it asks if I want to install it, I said yes. Then I installed the following:

#apt-get install python-dev libsnmp5-dev libcupsys2-dev python-qt3 lsb

Now I am able to print from Firefox and Open Office.
I hope this helps.

In a previous post, I used the link you just supplied and got my printing working. The hpjis drivers even installed better than the hplip I started with. A friend also recommended installing cupsys-bsd. I did all of that and now I am printing. I appreciate the time you and other take to create installation guide like that to help us out.

Thanks,

HP Officejet G85

I have been trying for over a month now to get my Officejet printing with no luck. I have tried all the instructions including this thread. My 7 year old daughter is very unhappy I got rid of her windows computer since the officejet is our only color printer.

Can anyone help get me out of this hot water with my daughter.

Thanks
