Debian Xserver error

Hello, this is my first post on linuxquestions.org
I have been using linux for about two years, and am familiar pretty familiar with it. After trying Fedora, openSUSE, Ubuntu, Freespire (terrible), and xandros, I thought, hey, it's time to give Debian a try.

I have configured debian as a Desktop System. When I run startx, I get an error that says X: NO SCREENS FOUND.

Does anyone know how fix this. I am running an Inspiron 1150. If you need more info just ask.

Are you sure there is an xserver installed? Which Debian variation, Sarge, Etch, Sid?

Yes I'm sure. I have xserver-xfree86 installed. I am using Debian Stable, which I believe is Sarge.

nope still get the same errors.

Perhaps the configuration file from /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 can be of use.

Notepad reads it funny (I'm posting in windows) so I uploaded it to my website here: www.vx7000world.com/XF86Config-4

I don't know how old an Inspiron 1150 is, but if it's less than a year or so old, you probably need Etch instead of Sarge. Laptops are particularly more suited to Etch. Hobbyists should be using Etch anyway. Sarge is for production systems and critical servers.

If you decide to try Etch go to the link I provided, download the Netinstall .iso (about 100 MB) and do a fresh install rather than trying to update from Sarge. There are issues with the upgrade from Xfree to Xorg.
