Debian Woody+xfree86 problem

My name is Marshall Haire. I am having trouble with a computer that I have back home that my dad is using. We recently installed debian wood 3.0r4 on it while I was home over easter. He has tried and tried his best to get the X windows system to work. He has a GeForce2 MMX 32 Megabyte video card with p92 IBM 19" CRT monitor. He has tried to using the dpkg --reconfigure command with xfree86 that I saw on another forum and it comes back saying that not everything is installed correctly. Is there some way it could be reinstalled to see if that will fix it or do I have to reinstall the system over again? He says it appears that it is not on the system any where. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Try running:
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install x-window-system
and see what error messages you see.

I'm a newbie myself, so this may be irrelevant, but I've completed two installs of Debian 3.0 and in both cases, had to install XFree86 downloaded from the XFree86 site before X worked. Both machines are older Dells, both use built-in VGA controllers, both worked using the "vesa" server, and in both cases I had to "tweak" the XF86Config-4 file manually.

Thanks everyone

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions. My dad just wanted something more stable and it seems like debian has been a problem. I may have him go back to Mandrake 10.1, but we tried installing a piece of software and it gave us that the X include files were missing. I'll pass along the information that every one here has provided. Thanks again.

This is the kind of error I first got, which eventually led me to installing 4.3 Xfree86 from XFree86.org. If you search the Debian forum, you'll find lots of information about difficulties getting X started, and a more intelligible explanation of what the "screen not find" error means than I can give. If I understand correctly, it means that the software isn't configured correctly - the virtual screen set up in the configuration file isn't compatible with the display controller as defined by the software.

Good luck.
