Debian without sound

Debian 6.0.6
64bit

# alsactl init
Code:
Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Analog Devices AD1988B" "HDA:11d4198b,104381f6,00100300" "0x1043" "0x81f6"
Hardware is initialized using a guess method
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
Code:
*0 [NVidia* * * * *]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
* * * * * * * * * * * HDA NVidia at 0xfe024000 irq 21
*1 [HDMI* * * * * *]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
* * * * * * * * * * * HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfddfc000 irq 16
Thanks

I would start by launching alsamixer (from the CLI) and making sure that the Master and PCM channels are unmuted and adjusted at full volume or an acceptable volume level (check this for more info).

Also, could you copy here the outputs of the following commands?:

Code:
lspci -k
aplay -l
Cheers.

You can also manually adjust the alsa mixer if you like.

Code:
alsamixer
Adjust all of the columns; raise all of the bars and make sure that at the bottom of each coluum it is not muted.
Muted is the double m's:
Code:
[mm]
Have a good weekend!

That is what it normally does, you should have sound going now, if not reboot do alsactl init again check if sound is working.
I have seen same behavior before.

Regards

I have rebooted several times and also repeated "alsactl init". Still there is no sound

$ sudo alsactl init

Looks like there's something interfering with your card. Try the following: play some sound and while it's playing, execute:

Code:
lsof /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
It should tell us which process is interfering with your card.

A youtube video is now being played

$ lsof /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
Code:
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
epiphany- 2279 satimis  mem    CHR  116,5          3867 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
epiphany- 2279 satimis   67u   CHR  116,5      0t0 3867 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p

Edit:

Sound comes back as follow;

The loudspeaker is plugged in the connector_7 "Line Out Port"
(please see attached Screenshot_rear_panel_connectors.png)

I removed the plug to connector_5 "Center/Subwoofer port. There was sound. Then I removed the plug back to Connector_7. Sound comes back.

The cause is unknown. Strange???

Hmm, it's strange, indeed. Maybe there's some loose connection somewhere? Have you tried another OS on this machine? (In case you have, does the sound work OK?).

No, not loose connection.

This is a dualboot system Debian 6.0.6 and Fedora 17. The later works without problem.

I have other 2 HDs on this PC (not all connected at the time)

HD-01 also dualboot Ubuntu 12.04 and Fedora 17, both without problem on sound
HD-02 running Debian 6.0. It had sound problem as well. Solution is same as described in my previous posting. unpluging and repluging.

It is quite strange
