debian with a upto date kernel
 

i just d/led the bebian woody. i grabbed the 2nd cd. it only has the 2.2 kernel on it. is there a disk that has the 2.4 kernels on it?

edit: the reason is that i would like to keep my reisersfs on what i have configured allready. the kernel isn't reconizing it when i try and do the manual mount as stated in the install instructions.

could the problem be that when it is booting up, i receive 'can't find /lib/modules/.... ? i'm starting to think that it is, but would like to start with a new version of a kernel any how.

you can apt-get a current kernel image.

do apt-cache search kernel-image*, that should show you the packages you can choose from...

so before i do this though, how do i keep my reisers on the disk?

if i install and then apt-get a new kernel so that it supports reisers, then i have to burn over the whole install with my reisers. so that doesn't help much.

I'm confused, are you trying to install woody on top of an existing Linux system or do you have another hard disk with stuff on it and you want to preserve that?

i would like to install woody with a reisersfs. i have/had an all ready existing linux install on it. i only want to keep the fs, but if i install with an ext2, then turn it into an ext3 by journalizing, i still don't have the reisers. if i apt-get me a new kernel, this only helps for the time that i have the ext3 on it. i still don't have a way to make a reisersfs on the hd, unless i reinstall. and then i'm back to where i started from.

so you see my delema. if i install, then i lose all of the benifits of my reisersfs, unless i can find a source that has a way to give me the compatability when i do the install. that is why i would like to have a new kernel so that i can do this.

by trying to enter my /dev/hda1, only one partition, in my /etc/fstab before i do the install, as documentation suggests, i still get "can't mount, unknown request", something along those lines.

so do i stay with my slack based system with reisers, the file system of my choice, or is there a way that i can put debian on that machine and still keep my reisersfs?

what flavor do i want to get the newest kernel on an iso? hopefully a 2.4 edition.

Have you tried just installing it on ReiserFS instead of ext2? When the installer asks you to partition your hard drive can't you just make the filesystem type ReiserFS? From what I understand you can do this with the 2.4 series kernels in Debian.

The "bf24" flavor which is on the first Debian CD. Hope you get it working!

the disk that i have doesnt' allow that. i found that if i get the disk5, that supports the reisersfs. so i need that one besides the other disk.

oh, i did try to do that, and each time i went to the "install on allready partitioned drive" it says that i can't.

Well, I meant when the installer calls cfdisk and you have the partition table in front of you. From that point, can you declare that the partition is ReiserFS and the installer will initialize it as such?

no, cfdisk reconizes that it's a reisersfs, yet the debian won't, for some reason allow it.

i did find out what i needed to know. you can either get the disk #5, which is bf2.4. or you can get 4 floppies that will do the same thing. then i found out that if you press F3 to enter other boot parameters, you can then type bf2.4 and it'll boot into the 2.4 kernel instead of the 2.2.

It does the exact same thing using disk 1, I just done recently and if I'm not mistaken, I thought it would ask which FS you want during installation, ext2, ext3 or reiser!

To clarify some of this - for emetib or anyone else who happens to view this thread:

When installing Debian Woody from CD1, at boot: type bf24. This designates boot floppy and kernel 2.4

When you install Debian with this selection from CD1 (you don't have to use CD5) you have the choice when you Initialize a Linux Partition of using Ext2, Ext3. or ReiserFS. You can install over your current installation and don't initialize the /home directory (or wherever) where your data is located that you want to save. This will, however, give you a new kernel, as opposed to the one you have now.
