Debian testing tells me Ethernet eth0 is "unmanaged"

My ethernet connection does not work at all. I'm told the device is "unmanaged" but I have no idea what that means nor do I know how to fix it. My wireless connection works perfectly. A little help would be hugely appreciated!

Taking from memory now, I think it means eth0 is not handled by Network Manager.
That means you handle it directly, edit /etc/network/interfaces to fit your needs.
Make sure you have a line "BOOTPROTO static" if you are not using dhcp.
Then enable eth0 with "sudo ifup eth0.

If this doesn't help, please give more info:
* "Debian testing tells me Ethernet eth0 is "unmanaged"" - how, when, what?
* What distro are you running, I'm just guessing Ubuntu?
* How have you configured eth0 & wlan?
All I can think of for now.

It does to me too. If you want network manager to handle your eth0 you should remove or comment out any eth0 related lines in your /etc/network/interfaces file. Alternatively to use a standard wired dhcp setup you can use the following two lines in your interfaces file
Code:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Hmm, that sounds like a RHEL ifcfg-eth0 directive. Can you confirm what you mean here?

Cheers,

Evo2.

Thumbs up

Thanks ever so much, guys! There were 4 working lines in that files - 2 referencing lo and 2 referencing eth0. Commented out the references to etho and, BINGO! It feels SO good to have the wired thing working again. :-)

Oops, you're so right! That was also taken from memory, I'm working with both ubuntu/debian and CentOS but forgot they have different directives.
