i would suggest testing instead of sarge not enough stable yet. I've been using testing for years without suffering. I don't bother with strange things like when i was using debian sid(i had to debug certains configurations or scripts or do few files editing). Debian sid was a pain in the ass and as i didn't have much time, i downgraded to testing. Fluxbox my only window manager and "desktop environment" is working correctly with rox-filer, gkrellm and a self made keyboard layout switcher. I use fluxbox 0.9.8 to experiment themes with pixmaps. I find it a little slow but more beautiful with icons,... The only thing missing in the deb package is bsetbg so i installed eterm to have esetroot.
I tried debian installer few weeks ago on my old pc and the installer was stuck at partitionning, it couldn't detect my disk and load the tulip module for my network card. I didn't have time compiling the modules on another pc to load them with a floppy so i gave up.
my best advice, install debian from woody cd without using dselect or tasksel, modifiy the sources.list file with vi and upgrade to testing with apt-get dist-upgrade, that's it that's all

Terran4000,
I hit the smae problem... and it seems no matter what i do it always freezes at the 14% mark.
---ie you're not the only one having this problem.
I suppose we just have to persist in our pursuits and try and try and try.... someones gonna figure out what's wrong eventually.

Yes, thats how you do it. Which is also the reason why you never have to download a new version of Debian, all you do is upgrade the packages and voila! Upgrading to unstable is done in the same way. However, dont ever go from unstable -> testing or testing -> stable, that wont work for shit. You'll end up with broken dependencies and have problems like you wouldnt believe...

Thanks for all the help :-D ... I finnaly got everything working without too many problems. All thats left, before I start installing programs that I can actually use for school on it, is to do some tweaking to get rid of a few errors and I'm all set. Just in case if you were wondering, the errors are not major and do not stop me from doing anything, I guess they are just warning messages (e.i. when I run dhclient it yells at me for having too many arguements in the dhcp-client script ... I'll fix it later hehe)
Thanks again for all your help.
