Debian startx problem.

I just installed debian from the 7CD's + upgrades CD and also did some apt-get updates/upgrades but after i login and i type startx im getting a error saying no device found ? just after it lists the xf86config.
Anyone know how to fix this ?

Dead Parrot 07-25-2004 04:02 AM

What Debian version are you currently running (stable/testing/unstable in /etc/apt/sources.list) and what's your kernel version (uname -r)? Also, what error messages (lines beginning with (EE) in /var/log/XFree86.0.log) did you get? What is the device that is reported as not found?

TuxToaster 07-25-2004 04:53 AM

3.0r2 with some updates etc
2.2.x

(--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device
(EE) No devices detected

Fatal server error
No screens found

Dead Parrot 07-25-2004 05:19 AM

2.2.x kernels are pretty old and they have poor support for new hardware. If you haven't got any good reasons against upgrading your kernel to 2.4.x, then I'd suggest that this should be the first thing to do before proceeding to diagnose your trouble starting X. If the problem persists even after kernel upgrade, you'll need to post your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and /var/log/XFree86.0.log in order to receive better informed advices.

Thanks, the system should be running 2.4.18 now but its still giving the same error.

Dead Parrot 07-25-2004 06:38 AM

Well, looking at your XF86Config-4 I'd suggest (in case you haven't already done this) that you should
look up the factory recommended monitor refresh values from your monitor's manual and use (as root user)
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" to add them to XF86Config-4. If you don't have the manual around,
do a google search and try to find this information (horizontal & vertical refresh rates) from some web page
that lists your monitor's technical properties.

Furthermore, I'd suggest that you remove the resolution modes "1600x1200", "1280x1024", "1280x960",
and "1152x864" from XF86Config-4 (again in "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86").

See if these changes make any difference.

Edit: Looking at your XFree86.0.log I get the impression that the device XFree86 doesn't find is your graphics card.
I hope that this a false diagnosis because I don't know how to fix it. Let's just hope that I'm wrong and it's a monitor
issue after all. (Well, if XFree86 doesn't detect your graphics card, you can always try pulling a newer version of
XFree86 from backports.org or Sarge/testing and see if that works better.)

recompilered your kernel-image with your card supported!

Dead Parrot 07-25-2004 08:57 AM

Mm... I forgot to ask if you've got discover installed or not. The command "dpkg -l | grep discover"
(where the option is small L, not big i) should tell you that. If discover is not installed, this would
be one possible explanation why XFree86 gives the "No devices detected" error message. If this is
the case, then installing discover might just fix the problem.
