Take a look at http://wiki.debian.org/KernelModesetting

I may be wrong but I think you need to disable the kernelmodsetting,

Edit /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf. You can use a livecd to edit the file.

Change modeset=1 to modeset=0

You can also edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and on the #kopt line add modeset=0 do not remove the # in front of kopt

I have to thank you for that. I was looking for a reason my fps dropped after the upgrade on 2.6.32-5 on both radeon and fglrx.

Isn't the Lenny kernel too old for KMS to be involved?

Lenny is considered the most recent stable release. Version 5 was released in February of 2009, so almost 18 months ago.

then how do i make this work i am having bootup trouble in ubuntu and nobody seems to be helping me much, but debian starts up perfectly but just can't get it to start in range of the monitor

and you mentioned the kernel in lenny is too old for this kind of thing so how do i compile and install the new kernel in a text interface i've only done it in graphical interface

If you need a more recent kernel with the Lenny installer you could try here:
