Debian Stable with AMD 64
I'm downloading Debian Stable for the AMD 64 processor. I've got a DFI motherboard and AMD 64 3200+ coming for my new system that I'm building. Has anyone used Debian with their AMD 64's? Any tips? Thanks. :)

AMD 64 DFI LANParty
I've got pretty much the same system and I'm looking to install a 64 bit compatible distro. I'm considering Gentoo, or Debian. I really like Debian and the regidity they adhere to in releasing stable packages. However, Gentoo's compiled system has attractive attributes as well. Are you aware of any advantages or disadvantages to either of these choices?
Thanks, P :Pengy: |
I can't say much about Gentoo as I have never tried them but Debian has been excellent for me. I used the AMD64 net install and everything went smoothly. No problems so far. The AMD64 port is still not official but it's very stable and once they "officially" put it on debian.org I bet a lot of people will start using it. Especially since there aren't a lot of linux distros that offer 64bit support at the moment. GL with the setup. :)

sempron blues
Thnks for your reply, I'm going to go ahead with the Debian install once I get a new proc. I dl'd the debian net install and relized I'd made a mistake in my proc purchase. I need an Opertron proc and not the sempron. "your proccessor does not support long mode"
oh well, I hope I can exchange the proc w/ newegg. Thanks for the reply, P |
I have succesfully (and painlessly) installed Ubuntu for amd64. It is based on debian, so I feel at home using it. I preferred it over debian netinstall because I'm on dialup. It has been working fine for several months now.

Yeah, I tried Ubuntu as well. I got ride of it because there was no KDE support and it wasn't included on the distro CD. Gnome is nice but I prefer KDE.

Well, as it's debian-based you have tons of packages (including KDE) available via apt, in the 'universe' repository. BTW, I use neither Gnome nor KDE. Just plain Windowmaker :)
