Debian Software Freezes imac

I have a red imac g3, though I'm not sure of the specs, which is NOT connecetd to the internet. I just installed Ubuntu last night, and all's been going great.
But just today, I downloaded some packages to install on a cdRom, popped it in my drive, and am having issues.
I use the command "dpkg -i <package>" in the root consule, and the machine keeps freezing! I did manage to install Python IDLE , but the next install I attempted froze the machine. After reboot, I tried to install BabyGimpo, which was missing a library(fine enough). But then the next install froze the machine again. After reboot, I attempted to install Inkscape, the process started, got to the extracting phase, then froze up again.
I'm wondering now if Debian is too large for my little imac, or am I doing something wrong. I'm still pretty wet behind the ears on the Linux.

Thanks, all.

I moved my deb files from the CD to the harddrive one by one(instead of all at once(which also froze the computer)), and they installed beautifully after that. Looks like I was a bit hasty in running to you all for help. My apologies and thanks again.

Perhaps there's some sort of DMA (or lack thereof) based issue with your CD drive? I don't know enough about mac stuff to be able to say for sure.
