I tried to do a install last night but couldnt get connected to the mirror..i tried another debian mirror but didnt work..I tried about 10 minutes ago and still cant get connected..I know its not my net connection because when I try to apt-get update on this laptop it does same thing..anyone else have problems with debians mirror..used the http//ftp.debian one and the http//htpp.us.debian.org one..and neither works

I just ran a test on http://ftp.us.debian.org/ and it is allowing me to update. I also successfully connected and downloaded packages from http://http.us.debian.org/. My initial guess would be you or your ISP is having some kind of DNS issue.

I went and rebooted modem and that didnt help..I rebooted router..that didnt help..I went and assigned open dns as my dns servers on router..that didnt help..guess ill either have to try another mirror..like kernel.org or wait till Time warner roadrunner gets it corrected..

I have TWRR and I was able to update today using the standard ftp://ftp.us.debian.org servers. I think rweaver is right that it is something to do with your configuration (or ISP) and not the debian servers.

Could it be that you are using the netinstall iso and it does not recognize the NIC in your PC so it is failing ?

try the etchnhalf install disc for Stable or the lenny netinstall for testing.

just a thought

nahh,,Ive installed debian with the net iso more than a dozen times and never had problems.I just used nano to edit sources list and used internaps server and its alright now..writing this from new install now..must have been my isp..Ive always just used the us.debian mirror.Probably stay with internap as source..it had good download rates..stayed in the 700kb/s range whole time

Perhaps you have a syntax entry somewhere in the source.list file... here's is my currently active on verbatim.

Code:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free

no..because I downloaded this net install disc about 2 weeks ago and have used a few times to install..and never had problem.so if if the source list on iso was right last week then it should work now...but what ever it was is gone..because I installed it on a laptop i had in closet and it installed..although i had to try it 3 times..the other 2 times the download speed was like 20-30kb/s..i had to reboot and go through reinstall until I got good download speed..usually around 600-700kb/s...I think from now on Ill always install and uncheck desktop..so if i do get a slow connection i can just install standard and reboot and install rest..rather than have to go through whole reinstall to get good connection..that craps annoying..lol..

I had the same problem with ftp.debian.us.org, so its not your config or ISP. I just changed the country code from us to uk and all was well.
