debian sarge - MANY problems

Got myself a copy of Debian Sarge (currently on cover of Linux magazine).

After spending most of the day on a STEEP learning curve I have it installed...
but

I'm having some major problems.
Most KDE apps take 2-3 minutes to open (AMD1700 / 768MB ddr ram), every browser crashes within a couple of minutes, usually when I try to type.
KPPP will not work.
Can't figure out why the nvidia drivers can't see the kernel-source that IS installed.

Have I missed something?
(Or, more to the point, can someone list what I might have missed?)

You could be right about the steep learning curve, and I say that non sarcastically. Your best bet to run sarge would be to download the net installer. That installer runs you through with no problems whatsoever and is easy as pie in my opinion. Sure it takes some time but you'll thank yourself later.

Are you using the nvidia drivers from the debian archive? I've tried the nvidia installer from nvidia's site and it didn't see my source...

as far as KPPP and getting it working, here is what I did and it worked.

1. as root configure KPPP and connect to the net, let set idle for about 15 seconds...writes resolv.conf

2. # cp /etc/ppp/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

3. #chmod 777 (or your preference) /etc/ppp

4. edit /etc/ppp/peers/provider and change /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS? (which ever is appropriate) and set serial poprt rate to desired level ie 57600 115200

5. edit /etc/ppp/options and change the line auth to noauth

6. configure KPPP as normal user and connect

try running: #apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

and try running the k7 kernel.
#apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.26-1-k7
(or 2.6.5-1K7)


get a net install cd :http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimag...86-netinst.iso

I wiped the drive and attempted to reinstall.
Ha!
Yesterday I spent approximately 6-7 hours installing and reinstalling Debian and got nowhere.
In the end I gave up and have gone back to Redhat & Mandrake.
I'll give Debian a go another time or when I can get a another pc to put it on.
