Debian sarge at the moment
 

ok i posted here before with some questions about debian sarge, but it has been a while ago so... here are some other questions.

when i go to the debian.org site to see if there is a debian sarge iso, the only thing i find are:

netinst CD image, with Debian base
businesscard CD image
full CD sets will be available later

i use to own a woody full cd imaga but i'm no familiar with NETIST CD IMAGE and BUSINSESSCARD CD IMAGE

so who can give me some info about these to thing?

Sarge isn't released yet, the netinst cd installs the base system after which you can use apt-get, dselect etc to update the system and install a shell and software from the mirrors.

You can download the ISO images from here, but before you do be aware of the following:

1. They are weekly builds and often the installers don't work properly
2. It's better to use the latest semi-stable debian installer - the netinst one - let that install and then download your required packages from the net .

so if im right the netinst is a clean version of debian with no packeges on it. after the ins tall i can get the packages through apt....right ?

are there anymore thing i should keep in mind while installin gnetinst

Before booting you'll see the chance to press function keys (F1, F2, etc). Please do so and read what options you have. Booting the installer CD with "linux26" will give you kernel 2.6.x.

Partitioning can be tricky. You move highlighted area up and down with cursor keys and press Enter where you want to change something.

Installing Grub bootloader is also tricky. You need to decide whether you want to install Grub to MBR (Master Boot Record) or to the beginning of your Debian root (/) partition (in case you already have another bootloader). Grub starts counting hard disks and partitions from number 0. So, what is usually seen as hard disk 1, partition 6, is (hd0,5) as far as Grub is concerned.

It might be useful to print and read the installation manual (you'll find a link in the installer web page) before actually installing Debian. If you don't succeed at first attempt, you are allowed to try second time, so there's no need to panic. ;)

If you download the netinst iso and burn it, you can boot your PC from it. It just installs the very basics. When it restarts you can then download the remaining packages from the net.

You can also use the installer to load packages from a Sarge CD-ROM if you have one, but you'll need to configure it to look for packages from the CD-ROM instead of the net by using running apt-cdrom (IIRC). Not that you'd want to do this probably.

At the boot prompt type linux26 to use the 2.6 kernel instead of pressing enter. Otherwise it will boot the 2.4 kernel (which is the default).

Can't think of anything else , it's just like installing any other linux distro really.
