debian sarge 3.1 no gui

Hi all,

sorry if this is a stupid question but I have been reading for hours trying to figure out how to start any gui after logging in.

I just did a new install after making the cd from the iso, everything went great.

I have been working with computers since the first macs, then went to pc and now I am totally stupid about linux but trying.

I have used and made plenty of live cds but this is my first real install.

Where would I look to see if there are any errors that I may not be aware of??

I'm just stuck at the console

The gui should start be default if it is installed.

Did the installer get you to make a task selection? Did you select 'desktop environment'?

Debian doesn't install the gui by default.

you can see if you have X (the gui) installed by typing the following into the console (as a normal user)
Code:
dpkg -s twm
This will tell you the instilation status of twm (twm comes with the gui). If you don't have twm installed you can run the tasksel program as root and select 'desktop environment' or you can run aptitude to select your programs manually.

hopefully that will fix your problem :-)
look
here for more information.

Did you choose to install the "Desktop environment" option during the second phase of the installation?

If not, run
Code:
tasksel
and selecgt the "Desktop environment" option.
Alternatively, if you want to pick and choose in a bit more detail, you can do so too, e.g. if you want a lean approach, installing just x-window-system and e.g. fluxbox is a pretty reasonable choice.

If you have installed the GUI stuff, but it isn't working, did you choose the correct settings during the configuration of X?
To re-run the X configuration, execute
Code:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 --priority=medium
or if you want to get a bit more detailed questions, omit the --priority=medium part of the above command.

I didn't use the spacebar to select the items on the task list during the original install.

since all I wanted was the desktop environment I just hit enter because it looked like it was already selected but it was only highlighted. I went back in there and could see that only the mail server was installed, didn't want that.

it's been downloading for about half an hour now so I should have a desktop pretty soon.

thanks so much you guys are the best,

-Gordon
