Debian Sarge 2.6.9 Gnome or X-server problem on thinkpad t41p

I'm stuck trying to figure out what's causing either Gnome or the xserver (Xorg) to crash.
I've just switched to Xorg (using this guide
X.org , in the hope of figuring out if it just were X, that had a problem, but no.

The problem shows its ugly self by making me unable to use the icons on the desktop screen.
Gnome runs sorta fine, except for the icons, so it's not a full crash, but a partiall crash.
Also I can't restart gnome (I can get into gdm though, but nothing more) without having to reboot Sarge.

A friend of mine suggested it might be firefox that is causing the problem, since he's sorta experiencing the same on his stationary computer.

I've also recently removed the fglrx (offical ati drivers) since it was just crap, and made everything crash when I went out of the xserver and into the command window (you know ctrl + f1).
Since then the system has been not quite the same.
Me and my friend removed all files concerning flgrx driver, but might it seem as there's something left, I don't know.

I'm also clueless where to find a driver to my ATI Mobility FireGL T2 card , and I think finding a new driver might solve the problem, but as said before I'm yet to find a driver which I can use.
For now I'm using the vesafb driver (until I find something else), which is crap by the way.

Anyone else experiencing the same thing, or at least got an idea?

It seems like you're running lots of software that is not officially supported in Sarge, so problems are to be expected. I'm not a Gnome expert (I don't even use Gnome), so I'm not going to offer you any suggestions on how to fix things that are currently broken in your system. Instead, I recommend that you first back up all your important data (to another partition or to removable media) and then comment out the debian lines in /etc/apt/sources.list and add this line:
Code:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary main restricted universe multiverse
Then do (as root) "apt-get update" and "apt-get dist-upgrade".

You should have a fair chance that this will change your Debian "Sarge" installation into Ubuntu "Hoary Hedgehog", which natively has packages for Xorg and the latest Gnome.

An alternative way is to download the Ubuntu ISO or order the Ubuntu installation CD-ROM and install Ubuntu instead of Debian. IMO, Ubuntu is the way to go if you want both Debian and Gnome. Ubuntu is basically Debian optimized for the latest Gnome desktop and you can still find most of Debian's apps from under the "universe" category. However, notice that the "Warty Warthog" version of Ubuntu doesn't have Xorg, which "Hoary" has.

So my basic advice is: Don't try to force Debian Sarge to do what it hasn't been designed to do. Instead, install Ubuntu that is designed to do exactly what you apparently want to do.

A friend of mine said the same thing; "try the ubuntu drivers".
The drivers works quite well since they are designed for a debian distro..
