Debian on USB hard drive?

Will this work?

At least after I tried with Ubuntu, it failed after two or three bootings. Icons dissapeared, things started to become malfunctional and then I could not boot it anymore.

I bought a 250GB external hard drive, and I would like to boot from it from another computer (laptop) without installing on the hard drive inside of it because the computer is not mine.

But before I do so, I was just wondering if it will work, and how good/bad it might work?

In theory it does, but how about this for a start?

Put the system on cdrom, less the logs etc. Use the harddrive for /home and writable portions of the filesystem, like /etc, /var and /dev (if you're using udev or other dynamic device registration tool).

Line of thought: laptops usually don't have a floppydrive anymore, but are bootable from cdrom. Also, booting a computer in general from an external disk isn't common (yet), even on modern hardware.

So, using the cdrom as my / and the hard drive for /home and others is at the moment the best possible solution? What about settings and configurations I make, will they be stored on my external hard drive? Same as programs and such I might install, will the be there after every boot?
