Debian newbie needs help

Hi all,
I just replaced RedHat with the only completely open source distribution: Debian.
It was not so simple to complete the installation and it still is not simple now that i would like to have a perfect Desktop version.
Any help is appreciated in order to set up sound, modem and printer.
I am running Debian Sarge with kernel 2.4.22, gnome 2.4, Athlon 1600 XP, 512 MB RAM DDR, Gigabyte GA-7VAXP Ultra, Nvidia GeForx4 64MB, ext modem 56K and the printer is HP Deskjet 930C.
Thank you.

my 1,000th post

There is a hcl button at the top of this page, which stands for Hardware Compatability List.
In that section you'll find some posts, and this one is my post concerning the HP 920C, which is almost identical to the HP 930C. Follow those same instructions and you'll be printing in no time.

You don't list your soundcard, so help is going to require you to do some research. First, as root, do
# lspci
which will list your PCI devices and something that looks like this
Code:

02:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 03)
will be your soundcard.

Using that information, go to the ALSA website. From that main page, under Latest Software Releases download the three files - Driver, Library, and Utilities from the column Stable release. While they're downloading, select Supported soundcards and find the one that the output of # lspci listed. Gigabyte's website only lists Realtek ALC650 codec for your sound, but that's not enough information.

I've never setup a 56K modem in *nix, because I have broadband and use a router with an ADSL modem. There are also some modems listed in the HCL guide.

Hope this helps, as I wanted my 1,000th post to be worthwhile. Whatever help you still need, post back.

As far as setting up the the HP930 I would suggest 1st installing cups and then using turboprint . I connected the 930 this weekend and it was really easy (better control than the M$ software with the printer). I use KDE so cannot advise on the modem but should be really easy. Establish whether its connected via ttyS0 or ttyS1. In M$ terms serial port 1 or 2. With sound establish exactly what card you have and then do modconf (as root) go down the list to sound card drivers and check whether the card is listed. If it is select it. If it's not then you may need to use alsa drivers.
