debian locking at screen but still running
I've just switched back to linux and i'm having trouble, this is the latest kernel, debian updated (unstable). But something is causing my system to freeze, i thought it was locking hard because i couldn't ctrl+alt+backspace or ctrl+alt+f1-9, and the caps lock button doesn't respond.
but i went to another machine in my house and installed putty and i could connect to the said frozen machine. The machine is running fine except that i can only access it from another machine thru ssh. You should look at the XFree86.0.log for errors with the graphical environment.

If youre running nvidia driver and have ps2 mouse and keyboard then either get usb adapters for them or borrow usb mouse and keyboard. It has to be both and if your lucky you should have no more problems. I had same problems on 2 machines and this tactic cured both. Good luck
