I've created a Debian Live image onto a USB key and have been attempting to configure a static ip address once its onto the USB key. I change the /etc/network/interfaces (and /live/cow/etc/network/interfaces fwiw) but when the machine reboots it overwrites the 'interfaces' file, which is rather frustrating.

In short I need the capability to configure the USB key with a unique ip address but due to my lack of experience in the *nix domain, I'm struggling to solve this issue...

not that i would know bout networking, but if you use a live how should the changes you make may be persistent after a reboot?

so:
how did you create the live-debian /where do you got it from?
how did you put it on the stick? unetbootin?

you may also unpack the live-iso and make the changes you want, if thats the way you wanna go:
