I've never used the live cd, so I can only point out that you only get NTFS write support when using the fuse/ntfs-3g driver. So you need to determine if the live CD is using that.
As long as the NTFS filesystem remains closed, I would surmise that the 3G driver will always continue to be "experimental", in that they could never guarantee it to be 100% compatible (heck, they probably couldn't do that even if it were open). But it's been around for several years now and I've never heard of anyone having problems with it, so it appears to be safe to use. Besides, considering it's the only way to get write-support in Linux, what choice do you have?

I currently use the live-CD sidux and "dpkg -l | grep ntfs-3g" gives:
ii ntfs-3g 1:2009.4.4-1 read-write NTFS driver for FUSE
