Debian Lenny - network printing setup

Hello forum,

I have two PCs working: an iMac with HP Photosmart C4180 All-in-one deskjet printer. The other PC is an old Gateway St. Francis midtower, where Debian Lenny terminal resides. I opted to have a text-only terminal, rather than the GNOME GUI.

My modem is a Westell VersaLink Modem (Gateway-Switch)

I use SSH for secure logins from the iMac Darwin terminal to the Debian terminal as root or 'user'.

How do I set up my Lenny terminal to print from the iMac printer (HP) through the network, using the terminal command line?

I have noted some of the useful postings on this forum, so I already have CUPS (apt-get) installed.

Thanks in advance for you help.

Install the hplips package (or something similarly named, use aptitude to find it) as this will install the correct driver for your printer. I understand the printer is connected to the iMac, right? In that case, you'd have to convert the iMac into a printer-server. Alternatively, use Samba (better the smb protocol) to have it discovered remotely. You may want to change where the printer is attached, as it's easier to convert Lenny to act as printer-server then an iMac (but I never had one of the latter, so can't confirm from personal experience )

You can use a text browser such as Lynx or Links to access the CUPS web interface from the command line. I think both may be in the repos. Links may be installed by default.

I downloaded CUPS tar file via Lynx. This type of install is not a typical "apt-get install file" as linux users are familiar with. I did a prior install of CUPS, yesterday but got nowhere.

There is a lot to read before proceeding with install. There is a bit of a learning curve on this one.

Both Dutch Master and Frankbell comments have been helpful.
