Question Debian Kernel Version

Sorry to bother all of you... but i was just wondering what version of the linux kernel debian's installers are running... the reason being thast i need support for my SATA controller (SiI 3112A) that appears only in kernel later than 2.4.22... I am happy to use sid... but what is the stability like... also is there a way to break into a shell from the installer so I can manually edit /etc/fstab and one more thing... what should I do to get my Intel Onboard Gigabit lan connection working. Please don't tell me to boot knoppix... my gigibyte ga-81875ultra motherboard win't boot it and nor will a friend's gigabyte motherboard... so if anyone will tell me the kernel versions i would be grateful... One more thing... Is sid actually stable enough to use on a day 2 day basis without having 2 crawl bak 2 unkle bill?

Sid is easily usable. I'm unfamiliar with your mobo issues though. Last time I checked Debian Stable used bf2.4.18 at install with the kernel-sources immediately available after install. Breaking into a different console is the same as all distros: ctrl-alt-F2. On Debian you get BusyBox.

What's your aversion to Knoppix and the knoppix-installer? And when you say "stable enough" do you mean for a desktop machine or a server? I find that most Debian users have more staunch idea of Stable than Redhat users.

We mean it.
