Debian installed. Need some guideline on moving forward :)

I've installed Debian Woody via Network and have done

- apt-get update
- apt-get upgrade
- apt-get dist-upgrade

Afterwhich I change the stable in the source list to sarge and did another round of

- apt-get update
- apt-get upgrade
- apt-get dist-upgrade

Thinking of trying out fluxbox and enlightenment.

a) So I install "apt-get install fluxbox". If I install (which I have not)enlightenment, how can I configure my default wm from commandline? I tried looking through the various X configuration files under /etc/X11, but nothing was mentioned about fluxbox, except in the fluxbox directory. So, how does xserver know which wm(fluxbox currently) to load?

Currently, I'm using LILO. I intend to change to GRUB. How should I go about changing it?

b) So far, I have install GRUB with "apt-get install grub". But when I reboot the system, it is still been loaded by LILO. What did I miss out?

Thank you !

Do you intend to start X manually or automatically? Using xdm, gdm, kdm, or no graphical login?

If you are doing it manually with startx, create a file in your home directory named .xsession and put in something like:

#!/bin/bash
exec /etc/X11/Xsession /usr/bin/fluxbox

Thanks for the reply.

How do I have a graphical login? What's the difference between xdm, gdm and kdm?

Anyone know about getting GRUB to work with Debian after doing a "apt-get install grub" ?

Thanks !

GDM is gnome display manager, KDM is the KDE display manager, and xdm is the builtin in X Display Manger. I personally prefer gdm, apt-get install gdm if you want to use it.

If you do a quick search on google.com/linux for "grub how to" you'll probably find plenty of info.

Following the instruction in the HOWTO GRUB, I have done the following:

apt-get install grub
grub-install /dev/hda (only C: drive)
update-grub

However, when I reboot, the system still startup via LILO.
What other steps should I carry out to enable boot via GRUB?

Thanks!

Did you install lilo to the MBR?
I'm guessing that if you did then you just need to overwrite the lilo created mbr with grub.

I don't use grub, but this looks like it might be able to help.

you may remove lilo first, then try grub-install /dev/hda
