Debian install from netinst..what else need setup to download packages??


Hi: just installed Debian from netinst..I did ppoeconf


plog give me this :

localhost pppd[891]:connect ppp1 <--> /dev/pts1/1
localhost pppd[891]:PAP authentication succeeded
localhost pppd[891]:not replacing default route to eth0
localhost pppd[891]:local IP address 200.113.46.76
localhost pppd[891]:remote IP adress 10.52.0.2
localhost pppd[891]rymary DNS address 200.50.96.90
localhost pppd[891]:secondary DNS address 200.54.144.227

ifconfig ppp0 give me this:
ppp0 link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
Inet addr:200.113.46.67 P-t-P:10.52.0.2 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP Pointtopoint running noarp multicast mto:1492 metric:1
Rx Packets:72 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
Tx Packets:5 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
colisions:0 txqueuelen:3
Rx bytes:3448 (3.3KiB) Tx bytes:97(97. 0 )

OK..it looks like I'm connected to the ISP
Now..what else need done tostart downloading the packages (xserver-xfree86,gnome ..or whatever
I would like to download and install synaptic to help me select and install packages in a sort of graphical environment..what do I have to do??

From where I'm standing...(sort of minimal debian)....what do I need to setup a desktop environment ???

you should have installed the base system over the net, including setting up your apt source list (http or ftp section)

apt-get install x-window-system
apt-get install gnome (or kde or wmaker or whatever)
apt-get install synaptic

Hi : has anybody installed debian from the installer Cd (netinst) ??

OK..I did it..no hazzles..except that I have an adsl connection to my ISP..I did ppoeconf..and get the results above after testinf

If I ping www.google.com ...I get unknown host www.google.com
If I do an apt-get update ...all I get are errors accesing the sites in sources.list
Looks like there is a dns issue here...

What can I do to resolve this problem..and start installing packages in debian???

Check the existance of name server entries in /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
