Unhappy Debian Install

I am new to Linux, but I do not like Red Hat Linux, too close to Microsoft. I tried installing the Woody unstable version, but a utility file was corrupt and the install failed. I then tried to install the woody stable version, and I got the following error message: instmnt/pool/main/t/texinfo/info_4.1-2_i386.deb is corrupt. This installation also failed. Am I doing something wrong? I downloaded the latest iso from one of the mirror sites, and burnt it to CD with Nero on my Windows XP machine. Any help is greatly appreciated.

have you used MD5checksums? With install issues it is possible that the iso had errors in it to start with.

No. I have seen the MD5checksums, but do not know how to use them.

an MD5checksum tells you whether the program has any error. You run a MD5checksum program on the iso and compare the output string with a string that you get from the site that you downloaded the iso from.
To get a checksum program for windows i would go here .

I just downloaded it. I'll give it a try and see what happens. Thank you very much for the help. If the checksum doesn't add up, I'll download the iso again from a different mirror. Thanks again for the help.
