Well, you should have downloaded the Net-install CD. Because what you have to do now is (vastly) automated with a netinstall CD. Log in as root, then invoke aptitude (easy: just type aptitude on the commandline ;)) Use the arrowkeys to navigate to Tasks in the topwindow, hit Enter. Now select the tasks you want the machine to handle, acknowledge your selection with the spacebar. It should now show an asterix (*) before the selected task. Press g twice and it should start retrieving packages from the internet. If it fails, open the file /etc/apt/sources.list and comment out the cdrom entry with a hash (#) Then add the following lines to the file:
Code:
deb ftp://ftp.tr.debian.org/debian-cd/ stable main [contrib] [non-free] |
You need to install the desktop environment when installing sarge by selecting it with the space bar when asked what programs you want installed , if i were you i would download debian etch and start again as etch will be the new stable shortly.
screenshots of the new etch installer : http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/sl...+3+screenshots here is the link to download etch i usually only download the first cd as this has all that i require for a basic install of gnome them apt-get the rest: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/we...s/i386/iso-cd/ here is the net install cd also its more for a custom build : http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ cheers edit: You now have 2 options Do what Dutch Master said to fix your install or follow my post and "download etch and start again". |
I would have thought that the desktop would have been loaded from an installer CD, unless you specifically did something to tell it not to. Did you try to make notes of any suggestions that came up during the install. I seem to remember that I had to run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" from the root login in order to get the desktop started. Give that a try.
Added: I agree with the other guys, though. Starting all over with the netinstall version of etch would probably be a wise move. |

and i dont know how to add those line  and i wanna say something : i skiped the apt configuration part and Mail transfer part on the installation proccess .. every time i choose a mirror the connection is 0% ( forever ) by the way i have dsl 256 .. so its not a decent one for downloading thanks Dutch Master .. --------- Quote:
is those to help in installing debian ? or a totally different release of debian ? so i will download etch .. and throw that debian-31r4-i386-binary-1 CD away any way is that the one .. debian-testing-i386-binary-1 source: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/et...c1/i386/bt-cd/ i like torrent better .. and thanks oldlucky --------- Quote:
or may the OS didn't recognize a current net connection despite that at the begining of the installation it said : Network (bla bla bla *idont remeber*) successfully and i tried your command and it says : bla bla bla ------------------- xserver-xfree86 not installed i wonder why they didnt put that desktop interface among installation of the OS its an essential thing .. otherwise its like DOS in Microsoft which means it Sucks thanks for the try Quakeboy02 .. but i will download etch and see  |
GOGO the torrent is the correct one below :
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/et...-1.iso.torrent Cheers |
run base-config go to the package selection menu, select the Destop environment as shown in the screenshot linked above, and let it install..
alternately I think the following will work as well. apt-get update apt-get install gdm gnome-desktop-environment xserver-xfree86 |

Perhaps a quick read of the install guide would help? It is always a good idea to read docs for things like installing software before attempting to install them.

Hi again ..

There are many desktop environments you can use:
