Debian Hard disk dont get detected

Hi,

I am trying a network install of debian 6.0 by dumping the contents of a DVD onto my local http server.

For some reason the Western Digital 80 GB pata HDD doesn't get detected when i click on 'detect disk',i even tried with a SATA,no luck.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

What motherboard? It may be that you need to use non-free firmware during the install for the disk controller.

hi,you are right.I downloaded the nonfree drivers from and extracted all the debs to my thumbdrive and it worked.

I think the initrd.gz file in netboot image doesn't contain any IDE or SATA drivers.

I was wondering shouldn't the debian-installer pickup the initrd.gz file from my DVD,why does it have it have to pick it up from the netboot image.

I suspect that the issue is related to your specific motherboard. The chipset on the motherboard probably falls under the Debian "non-free" guidelines. They don't include those kernel modules by default from Squeeze on. You have to download them separately.

Just out of curiosity, what chipset is on your motherboard?

I think you needed to select them from load installer components.

@pljvaldez - my motherboard is intel DG31PR with core2duo proc

If i make a new initrd.gz file with the non-free drivers in it,where do i put it?Into the DVD repository i.e /var/www/debian/install.amd/ or into the netboot image :-?

@EDDY- I tried selecting everything from the load isntaller components, but it didnt work.

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/NetbootFirmware

Or just download a netboot image that already has the non-free firmware.

Hi,

I made a custom initrd.gz file which solved the problem, and also if i used a business CD,the HDD and ethernet cards gets detected, but not when i use a netboot cd ( which is 16mb).

Strangely, everything goes fine with my network installation until the moment when grub-pc fails to install :(,i don't know why the grub fails even after using the DVD as my repository, may be i'll figure it out this weekend.
