Debian Hangs on Hotplugs

When I bootup Debian, it hangs on the USB portion of hotplugs. I have tried disabling usb but that didn't work. What should I do?

Thanx
Adam

Im guess this is a woody install in a laptop? I had this problem with my dell c640. Try booting into single user mode at the linux prompt. I memory serves me right in /etc/modules.conf there should be a memory address reference when loading your pcmcia drivers. Comment it out.

Either that or get the latest Sarge net-install and use it. The Sarge net-install didn't have this problem and installed with no problems for me.

Quite the opposite actually. This was installed on a desktop using the Sarge net install with the 2.6 kernel.

Here is what happens:

PCI Hotplugs load just fine, when it starts the USB Hotplugs, it just hangs. It doesn't proceed, everything locks up.

I have actually had this happen to me twice. Though I could just restart my computer and it would continue to boot. From what I could tell was that following the usb step was the nic hotplugging. Maybe in your case it has nothing to do with the usb, check to see if there is something wrong with your network card.

Other suggestions would be:

1 - Make sure the cd you used to install isn't currupt.
2 - If the iso checks out, redo the install, files are updated all the time during the stabilizing period of sarge. You may have caught it on an off day.

I hope this helps. If I think of anything else I will post again.

You could try to blacklist the USB modules in the '/etc/hotplug/blacklist' file. This will stop hotplug from trying to load the USB models. You can then manually load the modules by using 'modprobe' or by specifying them in your '/etc/modules' file.

Good luck

Is this happening after a fresh install? Or was it a regularly-working system before this problem came up? Or is it a problem that you have while booting from the install CD?

adamb10 03-21-2005 03:25 PM

Usually the system boots ok a couple times before the hotplugs start to fail. My system specs:

ASUS A7V8X-X Mobo
USB 2.0
Athlon XP 2100+
512MB 400MHZ DDR Ram
Geforce 5200 FX Ultra w/ 128MB DDR
120GB hard Drive w/ Win XP SP2
60GB Hard Drive w/ Debian using 2.6 kernel

Wow this no one is being helpful.

Ok, have you tried booting with everything under ps/2 ? (mouse & keyboard) Does it continue to hang?

Seeing as how you can't even bootup the system to even try most of the suggestions above... you might want to try doing through a livecd. It's a daunting task but it will allow you to mount your hd and tweak the files.

One more question. Have you had other distro's installed on the same system before? Have you experienced this with the other distros?

Once again, I know this sounds strange, but I would suggest trying the netinstall. Maybe, as I suggested above earlier, there is a buggy / half package installed, due to it not being fully uploaded(all dependancies required).

I hope that makes sense.

I'll keep looking for you and tell you if I come across anything that may help.

Good Luck.

I got knoppix so using a live cd is no problems. This little problem has NOT happened in any other distro I've used which range from Slackware to Fedora.

BTW I did do the netinstall.

Is the failure dependant on your hardware? I have a USB memory stick (SanDisk MiniCruzer) that used to immediately crash my Sarge system -- no error messages, no nothing -- but that worked fine on a variety of Windows systems. I've found other USB drives that work fine, however.

(PS. sometime in the past few months, I must have apt-got something that sort of solved this problem. The USB key no longer crashes my system, but I can't format, read, or write it. I'm not sure what the fix was, although I made sure to grab every hotplug and discover upgrade that came down the pipe.)

Hi

Try an older version of hotplug, had a similar problem as yours where it would boot most of the time then an odd time it would stop on usb
That cured my problem
Have version 0.020040329-16 installed
