The 5mx has a Arm 710T CPU, which uses the ARMv4T instruction set. This instruction set is the minimum that has to be present to run the ARM port of Debian. Another must have is 32MB+ RAM, but the 5mx has only 16MB, so running Debian on it is not something that you will have fun with even if you are managing to get it to a working state.

I think that it would be possible. I run squeeze on another mini pda with 32Mb. The kernel is of course adapted to it, and there is no x11 at all.
