software please

ah yeah the one minor detail..

i need a software solution..... (something free its only a test sever) ideally it would be something like zone alarm.

a firewall configuration software is what you need. See, in linux, the firewalling is done by iptables, a set of rule you can choose from and configure. It can be done manually, using scripts, or a software.

Please explain us what are your "small-medium scale projects".

projects

mainly multiple mysql databases... the largest being the generation of a yahoo launch alternative that runs off of mysql and php.. others being journals, photo libraries

others would be database driven websites and plain html websites. also the box will be used as a private ftp server for me to use in the transfer of files.

high chance that anything run off this server will onlybe for me and a few others

why don't you put a simple hardware firewall in front of it? it costs next to nothing compared with the hassle of doing it yourself.

Anyways, you could search on the net for iptables script generators, or software like firestarter, or search 'iptables' in sourceforge.net, or get the excellent script that comes on the floppy available on www.openna.com

no, you just buy a router like a linksys or a netgear for about 30$ and you forward the appropriate ports.

If you want software/scripts that interact with iptables, here are a few links.

http://firegate.sourceforge.net/
http://www.shorewall.net/
http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/
http://www.ipcop.org/
http://www.fwbuilder.org/
http://muse.linuxmafia.org/gshield/

I suggest Firewall Builder.

Also, iptables is the firewall subsystem for Kernel 2.4
If you are using Kernel 2.2, you will be using ipchains.

To learn about iptables, take a look at netfilter.
