Debian Etch sources.list mix between etch and sid - problems
Hi, I'm not sure when or how but on my Debian Etch box my /etc/apt/sources.list contains a sid entry:

deb etch main
deb-src etch main

deb sid main non-free contrib
deb-src sid main non-free contrib

deb etch/updates main contrib
deb-src etch/updates main contrib

I changed the sid entry to etch and most issues are gone except:

# apt-get install vlc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
vlc: Depends: libwxgtk2.6-0 (>= but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

#cat /etc/
Debian GNU/Linux lenny/sid

What should I do about libwxgtk2.6-0?
What's the best solution? Could upgrading to lenny sort the issues?

Please advise, thanks.

I would guess your best bet is to upgrade to lenny. It seems like the damage is already done. Downgrading is usually pretty complicated once you've done a dist-upgrade.

Problem solved.
To fix the problems I installed the packages: libwxgtk2, libgtk2, and libgtk2-common for lenny from

All the errors are gone and I installed vlc, pidgin and the plugins and a few other packages with no issues.
