Debian etch Canon Printer Driver Recommendation
 

I just netinstalled etch (AMD64, RC2) and although Debian can see the printer (Canon Pixma iP4300) color photo printer, there is no driver for it. The closest alternative for the ip4000 doesn't work at all. It doesn't even wake up the printer. There are no linux drivers on the printer's CD or at the Canon website.

Can anyone suggest another drive for me to try?

I just found some linux drivers on the Canon Europe website. I don't see your printer listed, but one of them may work. There's a form to submit requests.
There was nothing at all at Xmas 06, so things are looking up...in Europe anyway.

you also might try the Canon japan site....I found drivers for the pixusi560 there in RPM format...converted then to DEBs and worked perfectly...:)

Thank you both for the help. I've found that the S-600 driver also seems to work although I haven't tried any fancy printing yet but it seems to do a basic page ok.

I just want to backtrack to utanja's comment about downloading and converting the RPMs from the Canon Japan website to DEB format. May I ask what program you used to convert the files? Was is Alien? Also, which RPM files did you use specifically? Is there anything in particular I need to take into account to install the printer after that point, or do I just go through the standard process to install a new printer in CUPS?

I am considering purchasing this same printer (Canon PIXMA ip4300), could you do a followup on it Linux31? I would be using it almost exclusively for printing photos (which I have never had a need to do in Linux before). How does the photo quality stuff print?

All of the RPMs I have found for the ip4300 are for 32-bit (386) architecture. I am using a 64-bit debian etch, so I would need 64-bit(amd64). I have installed the gutenprint drivers, but the ip4300 isn't listed. So has anyone seen either:

a 64-bit rpm from canon for the ip4300
or a 64-bit version of gutenprint that contains the ip4300 drivers?

FWIW, I could print basic one-shot prints with the canon driver, but enlargements would print insanely small images on multiple sheets. I also seemed to be stuck with 600 dpi.

I ended up springing for turboprint one night at 1am, and haven't looked back.

use alien.....it worked perfect for me....then install with dpkg -i <debname>
you should be able to configure with cups...

Photo prints on the ip4300 are excellent. Get the canon photo paper plus glossy stuff. It looks great and the paper is quite cheap on amazon (I think).

I'm using the 32 bit version of etch - and the printer is not actually mine - it is plugged into another computer which runs windows. I probably should have pointed this out.

It appears that the ip4200 ppd file will work with the ip4300 as far as I can see. The driver is avaliable here:http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...n-PIXMA_IP4300
