The ftp website shows that the first DVD image is 4.6GB,
i use filezilla to download, it has reached 100%, but the download never stops and continue to shoot over 4.6GB, it is now 4.8GB and non-stopping!
Why like that?

Filezilla already shows 100% download, what i did is mount the image file to a virtual CD drive (alcohol 120%), the explorer show it is only 4.3GB, then i use Ashampoo Burner to burn it onto a DVD, OK! I test it for reboot, it is bootable.
Weird thing is the image file is 4.8GB, but actually it is only 4.3GB!

Any idea why it is like that?

Uhm... sorry for asking this question, but if you have a connection fast enough to allow you downloading 4.8 GB just like that, why do you download it all? I mean, you could use the netinstaller CD (100 MB), and after that install just what you want over the Internet. Usually that limits the download to 500 MB or so.

I am just wondering, knowing that the Debian people ask to avoid downloading complete distros if possible to reduce the server and network load.

hey, i took days to get 4.8GB,
my speed is slow, only 50kB/s maximum,
anyway, i solve the problem by mounting that image to virtual drive and burn it onto DVD.

OK, in that case it is not stupid.

I know how it is to install Linux from a 56k connection... somehow my main Internet connection often fails just when I am in the middle of a Linux installation and I have to revert to 56k.

A better way might be to do the installation on-line anyway, but make your apt cache locally available for other or new installation. Still, you'd "only" have to d/l 500 MB or so. That is not so much to limit the traffic on Debian's server, but your own traffic which is clearly more important. Directions of how to do this in the "apt how-to" I tried this, but I have to admit I failed.

Since you have your image now, it might not be of interest for you after all. Good luck installing!

The original size and the Size on Disk always differs.

Not to worry about.

Download if you want to. But it is actually not needed.
You can have all the software you want downloaded from the internet via apt-get or Synaptic (The apt-get front-end.)

The DVDs are actually intended for production machines, which cannot have internet. (That is what I feel.)

But yes. If you want to try all the stable software, you can download the 2nd DVD too.
(If suppose you are building a collection ;-) you will need it.

Good. So build up your collection. (But you will have to eventually throw it away over a period of time.)

58% now.

100% and burn the second DVD. The readme.txt says that the second DVD is optional, only the first DVD is enough for all common applications.

I plan to buy a 160GB HDD, that will be sufficient to install all useful packages.

You won't require that much space for just the packages.

Moreover, always go for more. Get a 200GB HDD.
