1.you dont have to download all 8 cds, the first three of them will be ok if you use it as a desktop

2.the stable version of debian sarge (3.1)is expected to be out on 16 september

If you have a fast internet connection on the computer that you are installing Debian to, you are better off downloading the "netinst" CD (from http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/). It is only about 100 MB or so. You can use it to install the base system and then download only the packages you need.

I would highly recommend doing the "netinst" of Sarge, as m_yates stated... it's much easier to use... and package management is easy.. after install... follow the directions in macondo's post... You'll be pleased... Good luck!

100 meg?? i was sure the debian-installer iso i downloaded not too long ago was only around 27 meg. did it used to be that small and what made it get so large if so, or am i thinking of something else i downloaded?

anyway, yes go with the debian-installer and if you want to use the 2.6 kernel type linux26 at the first prompt after you boot your pc with the cd.

The business card iso is only around 40 MB. The netinst one is a little over 100 MB. The netinst includes the Debian base system on the CD.

hmmm, oh well, wonder what the 27 meg download was for....
