Hi,
I recently installed my first debian, sarge. I had kept my home intact during this install, so all the previous configuration files were still present in my home dir. Since my favorite Windowmaker wasn't installed, I installed it using apt-get. But when I log into it, I find that everything is very messed up. None of my previous shortcuts seem to work. Even the standard "alt+tab" doesn't work properly.
The standard icons don't work. Clicking on one of these gives me the error

Error
Could not execute command
"/usr/X11R6/GNUstep/Applications/WPrefs.app/WPrefs"

And there is no /usr/X11R6/GNUstep directory present.

The biggest problem is that I can't find the configuration directory. I had one ~/.gnustep/library/windowmaker directory with mandrake 10.1. But this seems to have been deleted during installation. Do I need to create my own configuration directory?

I don't know how it could be easier- it takes me less than a minute to add a new distro and update the MBR.

Secure? How?

Hi macondo

I followed your advice and I installed guarddog as you explained in your thread 'Debian Post-Install Configuration'.

Now I have a firewll in function and I thank you for that but I have an error also.
Here are the thins:
I am runing Debian 3.1r1 with kernel 2.6.8-2-386, I installed the base system+GUI+Gnome. Everything is OK.

BUT

From time to time on bash terminal (not on GUI terminal) appear a message on my monitor like that:

DROPPED IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=01:005e:00:00:01:00:a0:c5:c8:46:a1:08:00 SRC=192.168.1.1 DST=224.0.0.1 LEN=28 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=1 ID=1061 PROTO=2

Doesn't matter where I am (in what program or window) it just appear on my screen this text. The only thing that I observed that is changing is ID.
This message become to appear after I installed firewall guarddog.

I don't know what I have to do. It is embarassed that when you want to do something to appear that message like that.
It appear to the login screen, it appear when I work in Midnight Commander, it appear with a regalrity of 3 minutes.

Please tell me what I have to do to disable this message?
What I must to configure for that messege not appear in the future?

Thanks.

Hi macondo

I followed your tips to install a firewall and I managed to install and configure guarddog as you explained in your thread 'Debian Post-Install Configuration'.

I have now a working firewall and I thank you for your advice but I have now an error also.

I have installed Debian 3.1r1 'sarge' with option linux26.
I installed base system+GUI+Gnome and everything was OK.
When I installed guarddog become to appear on my bash terminal (not on GUI terminal) a message like that:

DROPPED IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=01:00:5e:00:00:01:00:a0:c5:c8:46:a1:08:00 SRC=192.168.1.1 DST=224.0.0.1 LEN=28 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=1 ID=1061 PROTO=2

This message appear everywhere I work on bash, when I login debian, when I work in Midnight Commander, when I read on man or any program. Doesn't matter where I am this messagfe simply appear on my monitor. It is embarassed to work with something and suddely appear that message. The only thing, I observed that is changing is ID on that message, the rest of it is the same. It appear with a freqvens of 3 minute (every 3 minute I have it on my screen).

What I have to do to disable this message?
What I have to configure not to appear in the future?

Thanks a lot.

Eliminating log messages in Guarddog

Launch guarddog:

# guarddog

and in the section "Logging", disable these 2 lines:

Log blocked packets
Log rejected packets

Press Ok, wait a few seconds, a couple of messages will appear and then reboot.

CompiMan 03-16-2006 07:57 AM

Thanks.

I disable this two option in guarddog and everything is OK now.

Thanks again.
