debian autostart question (rc*)

I installed debian 3.0r4. But one problem - I can't get how debian manage autostart.
In gentoo there were nice utility 'etc-update', are there any analog in debian?

For example, my debian autostarts XDM, but I want to prevent it. I found S**xdm files in rc1, rc2, etc. So I must delete all these files? and again, if I want to autorun XDM, I must create symlinks?
Are there any other easier way to manage autostart?

No, you don't need to delete them. Manually, you could rename them so their name begins with something else than "S" (for example "s").
But it's easier to use 'update-rc.d'. Take a look at the man pages for it.
