Debian as a router, firewall, etc

Hello fellas!
I am currently looking into building myself a linux based router with some additional services. I chose debian as i am vaguely familiar with it (still a bloody linux newb). The System is pretty much a debian testing with Kernel 2.4.25. I read several newsgroup/forum posts stating that a debian kernel package would be no good for routing as some vital functions are disabled for security reasons. Is that true, if yes does it apply to all kernel packages i can get via apt-get or are there unofficial builds from a reasonably trustworthy source that could save me the time of compiling my own kernel (Which is btw going to fail, of that i am sure ).

A second problem is that i need to get this box to authenticate at a Win2000 PDC, which may require some kernelmodifications too. (i know that defies the meaning of a firewall)

In General: is there any way for me to check which features are supported by a certain kernel and which are not?

The best way to have the right kernel is to compile it yourself. In Debian this is pretty straightforward.
(Compiling )

In the kernel you can include the modules for NAT etc. About the w2k pdc, I have no experience with that.

if this is going to be your firewall/security box, make sure to have up to date kernels (ie 2.4.26) Usually upgrades entail some sort of exploit fix, although the latest exploits have been local, but you can't be too careful when network security is concerned.

thx for the help.

make xconfig failed right after start:
wish -f scripts/kconfig.tk
Application initialization failed: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable
Error in startup script: invalid command name "button"
while executing
"button .ref"
(file "scripts/kconfig.tk" line 51)
make: *** [xconfig] Error 1

any idea on how to fix this?

ok one step closer

i ran export DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0

now it says:

wish -f scripts/kconfig.tk
Application initialization failed: this isn't a Tk applicationcouldn't connect to display "127.0.0.1:0.0"
Error in startup script: invalid command name "button"
while executing
"button .ref"
(file "scripts/kconfig.tk" line 51)

btw. while trying around i did a setenv DISPLAY 127.0.0.1:0.0, any idea how to unset it?

Here's a real guide to compiling a kernel the Debian way instead of some fool telling you to compile as root.
