Debian AMD64 Users ... Change Your sources.list File NOW!

I have been having a lot of problems recently getting clean dist-upgrades from the repositories that have hosted the AMD64 port during it's development. I recently read a notice that these repos would be closed down shortly as the AMD64 release was incorporated into the official Debian repositories. The announcement said that Sid users should change their sources.list now, and that Etch users should do it 'soon'.

I decided to go ahead and upgrade to Sid since I was having a lot of problems with my mostly Etch installation. I changed sources.list to:
Quote:
deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
... like any 'official' Debian user, ran apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade ... and got a massive file replacement, after which all the problems I was having disappeared.

I will now set sources.list back to testing, assuming that it will be ready for any necessary upgrades when I am.

Here's a neat little tip I picked up while investigating this issue.

# netselect-apt unstable

Run it from /tmp or someplace out of the way. It will go out and randomly select 207 mirrors, test the speed from your web connection, and write you out a little sources.list file with the two fastest. I ran it 3 times, with 3 different winners, but only 1 mirror showed up in the top 2 every time. That's the one that is now in my sources.list.

Note that this IS NOT the case with sarge, for some strange reason. If you want to run a mixed sarge, testing system for example, you will need the old repositories for sarge, and the new ones for testing
