You'll need to configure the network card during the install process so that it uses the router address to connect to the internet. It could be there are no drivers for that network card but the Realtek 8139 is very cheap and is supported so why don't you use one of them. There is an article describing the process http://www.linuxworld.com/story/32864.htm and another http://twiki.iwethey.org/Main/DebianChrootInstall

That's bad news but hope you are up and about soon - at least the broken leg will give you an excuse to play with your new Debian system

recent debian distro/base files/ net install ?

Hi,
I'd like to install a debian distro. I have the woody distro but I have some problems with the old (old but stable, I know...) stuff on it.
Let me explain...actually, I can install it without any problems. But I can't have my network card (d-link DFE-530TX) working. I selected the via-rhine driver at install time. But this doesn't work. (I know there available drivers too but I'll explain hereunder why I don't want to go further in this way)

So I'd like to build myself a recent kernel (2.4.23) and hope it will be supported in this version. But as it my NIC, I'm really stuck by the fact that I can't download/transfer anything...And I don't want to do some transfers like downloading on another box, burn a cd and copying it over on the debian fresh install...I know that I should only take the kernel sources and the kernel headers, but I'm also sure there will always be something missing or outdated (ncurses, gcc...and other dependencies) that will prevent the kernel from being built.

What I actually would like is a kind of base install (as for gentoo for instance) that just installs the base files, but recent ones (latest kernel or so...).
Do you know anything like that, that could help me ? I know about net-installers, or minimalistic bootable iso's but where can I find a recent one ?

Thanks for your help !

PS : I want a "pure" debian...not a distro built on it...

ok, but as I said in my post, I know it is the via-rhine that I need...and I checked it at install time (network devices...). But a modprobe via-rhine, gives me a "No such device found" if I remember correctly...(lspci confirms that it is present)
Moreover, I have a doubt it is built as a module. I'd rather say it's built statically...is it possible, in the installer, to tell to build something as a module as with menuconfig ?

You need to follow the guide I posted because you need an alias set as well. It is a module. If you want to include it in the kernel you need to recompile the kernel.

OK, I'll try it then...I thought that modules.conf was only used to load automatically modules at boot time and that doing a modprobe didn't look at it.
