Did you manualy partitioned the disk? Or did you let the installer do it? Yes looks like somehow it went fault.
Ok now to find out what is the disk state, boot the machine with a live cd, then in the terminal as root type:
Code:

# fdisk -l
That will tell us what partitions are there.

Regards

Install another window manager or desktop environment along side of gnome, I recommend Openbox, it does use many of the gnome's features, logout from gnome and then go on the console with ctrl+alt+(F1-F6) and then as root:
Code:

apt-get install openbox
Or you can just remove and reinstall gnome, I would give a shot on Openbox 1st.

Regards

You say you installed with the DVD, but nothing else. What exactly did you do? Did you push the Enter key a few times and use the default settings or did you tinker with the installation in any way? There is no information to diagnose the problem. Perhaps re-install, studiously following the installation instructions?

Did you tried to go to the text console with ctrl+alt+(F1-F6) ?
And by the way what hardware do you have? Processor, RAM, video?
