It's now called "xserver-xorg" instead of "xserver-xfree86".

I guess xfree86 just dropped out of the repos and xorg is the only option now.

XFree86 was getting old so it wouldnt surprise me.

Xfree86 is in stable
xorg is in testing and unstable..

I would be very surprised if they have changed the xserver in the stable version to xorg...

# stable (x11): the XFree86 X server
4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1: alpha amd64 arm hppa i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc sparc
This one depends on xfree86-common and xserver-common

# testing (x11): transitional package for moving from xfree86 to X.Org
6.9.0.dfsg.1-6: alpha arm hppa i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc sparc
This one is an empty package depending on xserver-xorg

# unstable (x11): transitional package for moving from xfree86 to X.Org
1:7.0.17: all
This one is an empty package depending on xserver-xorg

master, have you mixed stable/testing/unstable?

apt-cache policy xserver-xfree86 ?

edit:
I doubt xfree86 is dead , last time xorg and xfree teams were working together and exchanging ideas. Xorg shows its real modular power on version 7 and its only the first steps.
