Debian 3.1(Sarge) will not install...?

I have bought two different Linux magazine's with Debian 3.1 on either a CD-ROM (3) "or" DVD-ROM format. I have tried installing either disk on two different machines...and it still stalls on both (after one hour+ it was still "Scanning") -see errors below please. My first quess is hardware incompatibility.I wont even ask about one of the computers because its slow and old and I didnt think it would install on it anyway.

But my fastest machine (2.4 GHZ AthlonXP) I thought would surely be the best possible machine to run Debian on. The Athlon has an older video card (Matrox Millenium) w/8MB of VRAM but it is powerful enough to run XP Pro, so I dont think thats the problem. Here is what I have and then I'll list the errors I'm getting:

AthlonXP 2.4GHZ
512 RAM
80GB HD
Sound Blaster 32
Matrox Millenium Video Card
DVD-ROM
DVD/CDRW

Errors/Halts:
After waiting for well over an hour:

Step: 30+mins
"Detecting hardware to find CD-ROM Drive
84%
Loading module 'ide-disk' for 'Linux ATA Disk'... "

it finally advances to the next step

Step: 35+mins (quit setup at this point)
"Scanning CD-ROM
30%
Scanning /cdrom/pool/main/a... "

Sorry this is so long, I hope it wasnt to hard to follow...anyone have
any ideas as to why the install is not loading ...using either CD's (3 of them) OR one DVD...???

The bug you are having is described here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=302303

As stated in the above web page, try booting with the command "linux26" and the 2.6.8 kernel modules won't be a problem. Or, you can boot with the command "expert" and deselect the "ide-disk" module when given the opportunity so that it won't be loaded.
