Debian 3.1 kernel upgrade to 2.6.8-16sarge1 causes CUPS to fail-unknown-parallel0
 

I am running Debian 3.1 and kernel-image-2.6.8-i386 and printing on parallel port using CUPS with no problem. When I upgraded the kernel using kernel-image-2.6.8-268-6_2.6.8-16sarge1_i386.deb, I could no longer print. Attempted set-up of parallel port using "localhost:631" displays "Parallel Port #1 (CANON)","Parallel Port #1 (EPSON)" and "Parallel Port #1." After selecting "Parallel Port #1" and completing printer installation, "localhost:531" describes printer as "Device URI:parallel:/dev/unknown-parallel0". I tried removing CUPS and reinstalling - still same problem. I removed kernel upgrade and reinstalled kernel-image-2.6.8-i386 and removed and reinstalled CUPS. The problem remains. Any suggestions?

what kind of printer is it? i have had the same problem in the past and they way i got around it was to install magicdev and let it uninstall gnome-volume-control and the hal system...i also installed discover....then i attempt the printer install and it was successful.....after that ...uninstall magicdev and reinstall the others it istalled and it should work...it did for me with a canon i560 using the japanese drivers for this printer....:)

The printer is a HP Deskjet 520. I have managed to get the printer running again by reinstalling the prior kernel-image, namely kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686_286-16_i386.deb and then removing and reinstalling the foomatics packages, e.g. foomatic-db, foomatic-db-engine, etc. On the laptop, "localhost:631" (CUPS) still generated an erroneous description of the printer as "Device URI:parallel:/dev/unknown-parallel0", but after I changed the description in /etc/cups/printers.conf to: "/dev/lp0", I got the printer to operate. I still have a few strange things happening, but at least the printer is running again.
