debian 3.0- not recognizing eth0-how to set up?
 

How do you get debian to 'see' the ethernet card, if it i not picked up during install? when i run ifconfig, it only shows my loopback...

Try ifconfig eth0 up. What net card do you have?

I think there's an 'etherconf' or 'dpkg-reconfigure etherconf' command (not in front of my debian system at the moment). You need to use one of them. Let us know how it goes.

Debain 3.0 doesn't have many ethernet drivers. Check your Ethernet card maker's website for one. They're not hard to install (usually).

Huh? It comes with every driver that 2.2 and/or 2.4 builds, basically.

Most of the drivers/modules for ethernet cards are present in recent kernels. There are of course some exception, but there is rarely a need to check the manufactureres website for a linux module?! Most of the time they don't support linux anyway even if it works fine in linux...

And as for being 'not hard to install' that could be questionable. If you are applying against a kernel, if you don't have the kernel sources installed, or the wrong ones, it could turn out to be a nightmare, for a newbie at least ;)
